America’s Next Verse is a new project, born at King Lodge No. 461 and now in its planning stages. Its goal is simple: help young people discover their own musical voice by connecting them with instruments, instruction, mentors and chances to perform, all rooted in America’s musical heritage.
Why Bristol
Bristol is the Birthplace of Country Music. The 1927 Bristol Sessions, the recordings that introduced the world to Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, happened a few blocks from our Lodge. America’s Next Verse starts here, with plans to grow into a national program in time.
Founded by two Brothers
The project was founded by two members of King Lodge: Bro. Weston Leonard, who has spent more than twenty years working with musicians in Bristol and the Appalachian region, and Bro. Ketch Secor, founder of Old Crow Medicine Show.
What’s planned
- Next Verse Instruments: putting instruments in the hands of young people who need them.
- Next Verse Artists: working musicians visiting, leading workshops and mentoring.
- Next Verse Songwriters: teaching young people to write their own songs.
- Next Verse Sessions: young musicians writing, collaborating, performing and recording together in Bristol.
Details are still being worked out, and we’ll share dates here as plans are confirmed.
