Frequently Asked Questions

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is the world’s oldest and largest fraternity. It’s about becoming a better man through timeless values like integrity, charity, self-improvement, and brotherhood. It's not a religion or secret society—it’s a personal journey toward excellence.

Is Freemasonry a religion or political organization?

No. Freemasonry welcomes men of all faiths and backgrounds. We respect religious diversity, but we are not a religion. We do not engage in politics or political endorsements inside our lodges.

What are the requirements to become a Mason?

You must be a man, at least 18 years old (in Tennessee), believe in a Supreme Being, and be of good moral character. You must also be willing to seek personal growth and contribute positively to your lodge and community.

How do I join King Lodge No. 461?

It's simple—just ask! Start by talking to a Mason you know, visit one of our breakfasts or public events, or contact us here. We'll guide you through the petition process and answer any questions you have.

What happens after I petition to join?

After submitting your petition, members will get to know you through a short, friendly investigation. If accepted, you’ll begin your journey through three degrees (Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason), learning and growing at your own pace.

Do I have to memorize anything?

Yes—but don’t worry! It's not overwhelming, and Brothers will mentor you every step of the way. The lessons you memorize are meant to stay with you for life—not just for ritual, but for daily living.

Is Freemasonry still relevant today?

More than ever. In a fast-paced, disconnected world, Freemasonry offers real connection, real mentorship, and real values. It’s about becoming your best self—and helping others do the same.

What kind of activities do Masons participate in?

Degree work, meetings, community service, social gatherings, mentoring new brothers, charity work, fundraising for good causes, honoring veterans, and occasionally just good food and fellowship.

Is Freemasonry expensive?

Lodge dues and degree fees are typically modest—especially compared to the lifelong value and connections you gain. At King Lodge, we work to ensure that Freemasonry is accessible to all good men. Our dues is less than $11 month.

Can I visit before I decide to join?

Absolutely! We encourage visitors to attend our breakfasts, open houses, or public service events. It's the best way to meet Brothers and see if Freemasonry feels like the right fit for you.
