A Journey Fulfilled: Brother Davan Johnson Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason

On the evening of June 5, 2025, King Lodge No. 461 had the distinct honor of raising Brother Davan Johnson to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. Brother Johnson began his Masonic journey in 2021, but like many of us, life’s winding roads called him away for a time. We were overjoyed to welcome him back this year, steadfast in his desire to complete what he started. His perseverance is a testament to the enduring call of the Craft—a call that often waits patiently in the background until the time is right.

The lodge was filled with the warm spirit of fellowship and brotherhood as 24 Masons gathered for this special occasion—15 members of King Lodge, 9 visiting brothers, and 1 Fifty-Year Mason, our very own Brother Jim Pepper, whose dedication to the fraternity continues to inspire generations.

We were also pleased to welcome brethren from several visiting lodges:

  • Sinking Creek Lodge No. 575

  • Zollicoffer Lodge No. 444

  • M.M. Martin Lodge No. 547

The evening began with a hearty meal shared among brothers. Bro. Jim Pepper prepared his legendary smoked brisket, a meal that has become a tradition of its own within our lodge. Our Stewards rounded out the feast with BBQ baked beans, coleslaw, and a sweet Southern favorite—banana pudding.

The work was carried out with reverence and precision, echoing the time-honored ceremonies that have shaped our fraternity for centuries. To become a Master Mason is to stand upon the same ancient path as the many who came before—builders not only of temples, but of communities, character, and brotherhood. For over 150 years, men in Bristol, Tennessee and Virginia have taken this same step, joining a legacy that stretches across the globe and through time itself.

Freemasonry is more than a local lodge—it is a worldwide brotherhood, bound together by shared values, mutual support, and a commitment to making good men better. Whether traveling across the state or across the world, Masons find familiar faces, open doors, and willing hands. We care for one another, support our communities, and extend that care to the widows and orphans of our departed brethren.

As we celebrated Brother Johnson’s advancement, we were reminded that every Mason’s journey is unique, but none of us walk it alone. We walk it together—linked by the same obligations, symbols, and light.

If you’ve ever wondered what it means to be a Freemason, or if you feel the call to become part of something greater than yourself, we invite you to reach out. Visit us at one of our meals, join us at our monthly breakfast, or simply contact us through our website. We’d be honored to talk with you about the journey.
