Masonic Relief Efforts for Hurricane Helene: A Brotherhood in Action

In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastation, Freemasons have once again stepped forward, living up to their sacred duty of charity and relief for those in need. History shows that, in times of crisis, Masons have always been there to lend a helping hand, and this moment is no different. Across the cities affected, our vast network of lodges allows us to be uniquely positioned to respond swiftly and effectively, ensuring that aid reaches where it is most needed.

In the past weeks, King Lodge No. 461 has been blessed to be able to assist with the relief efforts. Through the generosity of our members and the broader community, we have raised over $1,700 and collected enough supplies to fill three trucks. These were delivered today, October 5th, 2024, to Unicoi Lodge, where our brothers are spearheading distribution efforts to those hardest hit by the hurricane.

"When you are good to others, you are best to yourself."

Our lodge has seen a remarkable outpouring of support, with members and donors contributing essential supplies and funds. Brother Weston Leonard, our lodge secretary, has been tireless in his efforts, personally handling the monetary donations and going out daily to purchase supplies. His dedication has been crucial in ensuring that the needed items reached the lodge, ready for distribution.

Today’s relief effort also coincided with our monthly public breakfast. Instead of raising funds for lodge activities, all donations received at the breakfast were directed to the Hurricane Helene relief fund. Brothers Jim Pepper and Billy Rivers, who consistently help organize our breakfasts, worked alongside Brother Weston Leonard to ensure everything ran smoothly. Brother Mason Baker, who originally suggested finding a way to support those affected by the hurricane, also worked tirelessly, assisting with logistics alongside Brothers Bill Caffey, David Smith, Robert Smith, and WM Justin Plaster.

Special thanks are due to Brothers David Williams and Mason Baker, who went above and beyond by staying after the breakfast to clean up, ensuring the supplies could be delivered promptly to Unicoi Lodge. Their dedication embodies the Masonic spirit of service.

Our hearts go out to all those impacted by Hurricane Helene, and as Masons, we are committed to continuing our support over the coming weeks and months. Relief doesn’t end today—it’s an ongoing mission, one we undertake with solemnity and resolve.

In the words of Unicoi Lodge, who have joined forces with the York Rite bodies in this effort, “As Masons, we took a pledge to help those in need. It is the right thing to do, the Masonic thing to do, and the Christian thing to do.”

There are many ways to help those affected by the flooding. Donations of supplies and money are still urgently needed, and anyone wishing to contribute can contact our lodge or Unicoi Lodge directly. A GoFundMe page has also been set up, with 100% of all donations going directly to those in the local area.

Additionally, Unicoi Lodge has organized a hamburger and hotdog dinner on Monday, October 7th, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. This event is open to anyone in need of a hot meal, and while no charge will be made, donations are welcome. Volunteers are also needed to help cook and serve, with preparations beginning at 3:00 PM.

As Masons, we will continue to answer the call to charity, standing by our brothers and our communities in this time of need. This is what we do—it’s what Masons have always done.

Please join us in supporting those affected by Hurricane Helene. Together, we can make a difference.
