E. B. McClanahan
Worshipful Master: 1877-78
Founding Elder in Bristol’s Early Church History
- Central Presbyterian Church (Originally Goodson / Second Presbyterian): In the early 1870s, as the twin towns of Bristol, TN and Goodson, VA were developing, McClanahan was an instrumental figure in establishing the local Presbyterian congregation.
According to Goodspeed’s History of Tennessee (Sullivan County), when the congregation was organized under the preaching of the Rev. Dr. James D. Tadlock (the first president of King College), E. B. McClanahan was elected and installed as one of the original Ruling Elders alongside John H. Winston and Victor Doriot.
During his service in the session, the congregation met temporarily in the Episcopal building before completing their first dedicated frame sanctuary in the spring of 1878 at the corner of Moore and Cumberland Streets, the direct forerunner of what is known today as Central Presbyterian Church.
Masonic Leadership at King Lodge No. 461
E. B. McClanahan served as Worshipful Master from 1878 to 1879.
This coincided with the decade following the lodge’s charter (constituted in the 1870s), a pivotal post-Reconstruction period during which Bristol’s civic and fraternal institutions were establishing permanent roots across the state line. His tenure as Master closely overlapped his active leadership in the construction and opening of the Moore and Cumberland church edifice.
